What is folklore? Professor Martha Sims and Stephens discuss the meaning of folklore in their book. Folklore as they mention is not the historical behaviors of other cultures or only practiced by simple, primitive, quaint, old-fashioned people. Also folklore is not popular culture, which is “created or produced in large quantities for large audiences, and usually shared or transmitted through mass media.” She makes a very notable definition that folklore does not apply itself to any definitions such as “true”, “simple”, or “primitive”. Folklore is not pop culture. It is also not official. This to me was very confusing as I reflected on this. Terms such as they classified as what is and isn’t folklore made it more confusing. The way the word is defined in this context sounds very different to the way it’s defined is rather different than the way it’s used in common speak, I believe more emphasis should have been made on this.
