"Since each faith assumes that it and it alone is right, the proximity of others making the same claim becomes an implicit challenge that is hard to bear."

Personally I do not agree with this statement in current times. Yes maybe at the time Jerusalem was developing but currently I think a strong statement of the sort is generalizing the three religions and making an assumption that each religion can not associate with the other. I am not saying there is not conflict but I really do not believe the conflict stems at each religion stating that their religion is the right one and no other can be accepted. Obviously to believe one you would have to disbelieve the other but I believe it has to do with certain points in the religion but I really believe religion is chosen to how you feel you want to live your life. What I mean about that is what religion come close to what you feel is the best way for you to live and pursue your life. I just feel stating "hard to bear" is pretty strong, I mean I really do not believe each of the three monotheistic religions have a hard time bearing the other.
